Come try your hand at Raku, Naked Raku or Obvara. We will have two, one day sessions available for 16 Guild members to fire 2-3 pieces. Participants will make their pieces on their own time, we will bisque fire them, provide glazes and help you fire them in the Raku kiln.

• Instructional pdf
• 1/2 bag of Raku Clay
• Bisque firing of your pieces
• A variety of Raku glazes, Obvara mixture and Naked Raku slip/glaze available in the studio and on site
• Each participant will have 2-3 pieces fired during the workshop. Maximum size per piece 6”x6” base x 10” tall.
• Reduction containers will be provided but participants are welcome to bring their own.
• Sawdust will be provided, but participants should also bring newsprint with them.
• Safety gloves will be provided.

Important to Know

• Studio time to make pieces is not included in this event.
• After pieces are fired in the Raku kiln, participants are responsible for managing their pieces in a reduction chamber.
• Participants must be present on the day to have their pieces fired.
• The event takes place outside so make sure you come dressed to spend the whole day outside and get a bit dirty.
• Bring your own chair, lunch, and drinks. Coffee and treats will be provided.
• There is access to a bathroom on site.

Safety

This is a fun event but as we will be working around open fire, participants must abide by the following:

• No loose fitting clothing
• Wear natural fibres
• Tie hair back or cover loose hair
• Wear close-toed shoes: No sandals, slip-on shoes or Crocs permitted.

• Studio members can pick up their clay any day after this time.
• Alternative arrangements can be made for other members as needed.

October 9 – Bisque Firing

• Pieces must be bone dry and ready for bisque firing. A designated shelf in the front room will be labelled RAKU where pieces can be put before and after the bisque firing.
• If we don’t feel your piece is dry enough it will not be fired.

October 12th - Begin Glazing

• Raku glazes will be available in the studio for participants to use to glaze their pieces.
• Studio access arrangements will be made for General Members as needed.
• Glaze and other materials will also be available on site.

October 17th or 18th – Workshop

• Bring your pieces with you for the day you signed up for.

Surface Decoration & Texture

Add layered surfaces, slip, carving, texture, and depth without overwhelming the form.

Kiefer Floreal is a professional ceramic artist, educator, national presenter, and grant recipient based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Originally from Kenora, Ontario, he first discovered clay in high school and has spent years developing a distinctive studio practice through curiosity, experimentation, and thousands of hours at the wheel.

Today, Kiefer is recognized across Canada for his engaging demonstrations, generous teaching style, and ability to make complex ceramic techniques accessible to potters of every skill level. He has presented at Fusion and has also appeared on The Great Canadian Pottery Throw Down.

His work is represented by the Gardiner Museum Shop in Toronto and Vessels & Sticks, and includes functional soda-fired pottery, sculptural forms, and gyotaku-inspired ceramics connected to Lake of the Woods, memory, landscape, and place.

At the heart of Kiefer's practice is a passion for sharing knowledge. He creates welcoming spaces where curiosity replaces perfection and experimentation leads to growth.

Observing registrants will have the opportunity to observe and listen to teachings, however will not have the opportunity to sit at a wheel or work with clay due to the number of wheels available.

Advanced Wheel Throwing

Explore off-the-hump repetition, narrow necks, and augmenting forms directly on the wheel.
