Nerikomi

We are excited to announce the upcoming one day introduction to Nerikomi workshop. Nerikomi is a Japanese pottery technique that involves hand-building with colored clays to create intricate patterns. This is achieved by stacking, slicing, and combining multiple colors of clay to form a "loaf," from which patterns are revealed and then used to create ceramic forms.

Nerikomi

Eiko Maeda is our workshop instructor. Eiko is a Japanese-born ceramic artist based in Toronto. She studied traditional urushi (lacquer) techniques at Joshibi University of Art and Design in Tokyo and later trained in ceramics at the Visual Arts Center in Montreal (2006–2010). Her work emphasizes nerikomi, a Japanese technique involving layered colored clay, which she learned under Eiji Murofushi in Fuji, Japan.

Eiko uses Laguna porcelain, however attendees are encouraged to use clay that is as white as possible to allow colours to be more visible. Clay will be provided by the studio.
